As I think of things that are important for prospective buyers to know, I will put it here.

When the puppies go to their new homes, they will have had at least their first shot, and a deworming.  That first shot is just the beginning of a series of shots that a puppy will need for their life.  Usually puppies get shots every 3 weeks or so until they are 16 weeks old.  Then they need a yearly booster for several diseases.  The shots are a preventive for parvo, and other diseases.  Parvo and distemper are common diseases in unvaccinated puppies, and are terrible diseases.  Most puppies that get parvo die, and it is a terrible death.

We do refuse the right to sell to anyone.  If we feel that it isn't in the best interest of the puppies to go to a particular home, or situation, we will not sell you the puppy.  Puppies are not just commodities to us, but baby animals that need nice homes.

 mps vi information

All of our dogs have been dna tested for mps vi or are from tested parents who are normal (clear) of the gene. We have one older female that has not been spayed that is tested as carrier for this disorder.  All of our other breeding dogs have been tested and are tested normal (clear) of mps vi.  The carrier female's puppies are all sold with limited registration, and puppy buyers are told that the puppy is not to be used for breeding.

A few notes about mps vi.  It is an autosomal recessive gene.  This simply means that in order to have a puppy that is affected by the disorder BOTH parents must be carriers for the disorder.  A dog that is a carrier for the disorder is unaffected by the gene.  The only time being a carrier for the disease is a problem is when that dog is used for breeding.  In order to prevent passing the disease along, we have tested all of our dogs unless their parents were tested and shown to be normal (clear) of mps vi.  If both parents were tested normal (clear) the offspring should also be normal (clear)

If your dog is spayed or neutered and is simply the family pet, testing isn't necessary.  IF you plan to breed your dog at some point, we highly recommend testing of both parents.

As of Mar. 10, 2009, only 470 dogs have been tested for this disorder, by PennGen, the veterinary testing lab that developed the dna test for the disorder.  We believe that the breed club should make more of an effort to spread the word of this disorder so we can help prevent the production of puppies that are affected.
